Civil engineers who work in stormwater drainage work at the highest level of design and planning, which requires solving large and often time sensitive complex problems.
Urban and regional planners including architects look to civil engineers to provide the most efficient and cost effective stormwater drainage systems, surface and sub-surface drainage.
Engineers ensure that stormwater drainage management plans fulfil the relevant criteria and requirement for any planned application, including development application and construction certificates. They provide hydraulic solutions for residential and commercial development with all types of ground conditions.
A Stormwater Drainage Management Plan Covers:
- Roofwater systems
- Stormwater drainage design
- Onsite detention systems
- Rainwater re-use systems
- Grey water re-use systems
- Flood and overland flow analysis
- Water sensitive urban design
- Stormwater hydraulic solutions
- Pipeline extensions
Civil engineers and architects are both equally involved in the stormwater drainage planning and design. However, an engineer will evaluate the functional and structural integrity of the design that the architect has created.
They will find ways to make the construction design possible by suggesting modifications in order to turn the architect’s vision into reality.
When looking for a suitable civil engineer to carry out your stormwater plans – it is important to compile a checklist of things to consider. Here’s our top three critical factors when looking for a civil engineer:
#1 Expertise
Civil engineers are experts in their field using the principles of calculus, trigonometry, and other advanced mathematics for analysis, design, and troubleshooting.
This makes it imperative that professional civil engineers monitor, evaluate and manage the workflow at a job site. Civil engineers are expected to communicate with all relevant professionals, such as architects, landscape architects, and urban planners.
#2 Quality
Highly qualified civil engineers have to possess strong analytical aptitude skills that will determine the feasibility of stormwater drainage plans, especially regarding financial costs and safety concerns.
They are ultimately responsible for the infrastructure and implementation. Therefore, they must be able to lead surveyors, construction managers, and other industry professionals to implement the plan.
#3 Time Management
The effective use of time management by a civil engineer is a vital element needed to successfully meet the budget and allocated timeframe for the completion of work. It is key to delivering profitability and success to any given project.
Case Study: 22 George Street Leichardt
The development involved the construction of a critical Sydney Water trunk drainage stormwater deviation on a tight environment of local streets. The construction involved a large 2.1m wide by 1.8m high rectangle box drains and curved transition structures over a total length of 111m.
The narrow streets and lanes and the deep excavation of up to 5.5m required a high degree of accuracy in the construction technique.
This was also coupled by addressing the associated safety issues, and the careful protection of a large number of dangerous electrical and gas services, that were located immediately adjacent to and over the works.
The construction process was completed successfully on time and within budget and transferred to the ownership of Sydney Water.
